The Delacon Dandelion stands out due to its unique properties. It serves as a novel interface to communicate with the digital world. The design, an over-sized model of a dandelion, houses a series of highly sensitive airflow detectors. When these sensors detect a change in airflow, the digital clone of the flower on the LED screen reacts accordingly. The seeds of the digital dandelion begin their magical journey, their direction and speed determined by the strength and direction of the airflow on the physical model.
The realization of this design involved a unique manufacturing process. The base structure is a 5:1 upscaled model of a dandelion, housing an array of airflow sensors arranged in a 3D grid. This grid can determine the vector of potential airflow in its surroundings. The information is processed through an embedded microcontroller and sent to the software controlling the LED wall, resulting in a real-time reaction of the digital flower to the manipulations of the analog model.
Responsive Spaces faced several challenges during the design process. The team had to develop a solution that would combine a solid, durable exhibition interface with a delicate, sensitive sensor array. The design had to be robust enough to withstand extended stress while remaining sensitive enough to detect even the slightest change in airflow. The result is a pragmatic yet elegant blend of the analog and digital worlds.
The Delacon Dandelion was unveiled at the IPPE 2018 in Atlanta, USA. The design was well-received and was awarded Platinum in A' Interface, Interaction and User Experience Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing and advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
In conclusion, the Delacon Dandelion by Responsive Spaces is a testament to the transformative power of design. It embodies the beauty and complexity of nature, providing a unique, interactive experience that bridges the gap between the physical and digital worlds. This innovative design serves as a reminder of the limitless possibilities that can be achieved when art, technology, and nature converge.
